Research cooperation between Asylkoordination Österreich and the TransLaw Research Group

02.03.2023

Asylkoordination Österreich and the TransLaw Research Group are pleased to announce their cooperation in the research project "Courtroom observation of proceedings at the Federal Administrative Court (Bundesverwaltungsgericht)". The project was initiated in December 2022 by the volunteer network "Kompetenznetzwerk Asyl" to identify potential issues in asylum appeal hearings. As part of the project, Asylkoordination Österreich trained 50 volunteers who will observe 120 asylum hearings at the Federal Administrative Court from January to October 2023. The aim of the research is to provide valuable insights into the legal processes and to identify areas of improvement

Simone Uran and Ivana Havelka from the TransLaw Research Group are involved in this project as researchers and observers. For her PhD thesis, Simone Uran is investigating interpreting during court proceedings in asylum and related matters at the Federal Administrative Court (BVwG). Ivana Havelka took part in the training of the volunteer observers in the project of Asylkoordination Österreich ("Court Observation of Proceedings at the Federal Administrative Court") by providing insights into the requirements and expectations of a crucial component in any multilingual procedure: legal interpreting.

The cooperation of Asylkoordination Österreich and the TransLaw Research Group in the project "Court Observation of Proceedings at the Federal Administrative Court" serves the interdisciplinary evaluation of appeal hearings in the asylum procedure. The project goal is to identify possible structural issues in the court proceedings in order to ultimately promote transparency and fairness in the asylum system. The results of the project will contribute to the existing knowledge on asylum procedures in Austria and shed light on the challenges asylum seekers face in the appeal process. We look forward to the valuable results this project will deliver.
